“Installing an HVAC system in a new home, or replacing one in an existing home, is no easy feat. There are numerous factors you must consider, and many options you must weigh. This is truly an opportunity where the more information you have, the better equipped you are to choose the right system for your needs.

What is an HVAC system? HVAC is an acronym that stands for Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning. A home’s HVAC system is responsible for maintaining a preferred temperature, managing air quality, and properly ventilating the entire home. An HVAC system generally consists of an air conditioning/heater unit, ductwork, and other components necessary for comfortable and healthy air.

A new system. When choosing a new HVAC system, it is important to carefully review your home. No two homes are exactly alike, and your personal preferences for air temperature and moisture levels should also come into play when choosing a new HVAC system. It is important to consult a professional to learn what systems are right for your home, your budget, and your level of comfort.

Cost. The cost of a brand-new HVAC system depends on many factors, including the size of your home, the units and components chosen and other factors like how well your home is insulated.

Long-term planning. When replacing an HVAC system, it is important to think ahead. Buying ENERGY STAR-rated appliances and a more energy-efficient HVAC system will save you time in the long haul. Depending on where you live, integrating solar energy into your home’s HVAC system can be not only great for the environment, but also allows you to tap into a completely free and unregulated energy source– the sun. Also, installing a solar-integrated HVAC system also makes you eligible for tax breaks and tax credits.

Minnesota Cold Weather Rule Ending Soon

There are just a few days left of the Minnesota Cold Weather Rule, which protects Minnesotans from unlawful shut offs from October 15 to April 15. All Minnesota Energy Resources customers are eligible for this service, but once April 15th hits, utilities that have gone unpaid will be shut off until paid, or until payment plans are set in place.

An article from the Pioneer Press states that “CenterPoint Energy, the state’s largest natural gas provider with 790,000 customers, is urging its customers with bills two months or more past due to contact the utility about setting up payment schedules.” This way customers can avoid shut offs during the time when the Cold Weather Rule is not in effect.

The moral of the story: Pay your utilities on time, or you’ll be suffering the consequences this summer. For more on this issue, see this article.
